HIGH GEAR-19

A PART OF LIVING

By Dennis Highland

It's so nice sometimes. Going there and meeting that special someone who thinks like you do, and you know that or else you wouldn't be there in the first place and neither would the other person.

And you share each other, and maybe you know each other's full names and maybe you don't. But it doesn't make any difference anyway. That's part of living what you and those like you are. And it doesn't often bother you, even though you may never see or be with that person again, because that's living, and it can be very nice sometimes.

But sometimes it can be hell. It makes your insides curdle up and makes your brows wrinkle

and your eyes tear. And it makes you feel faded and tired and sullen. And it makes you feel empty; all this because it sometimes makes you alone.

And this happens enough so that you don't like to be alone, and you want to find out the full name of the other person you are sharing. And the age. And the occupation. And the desires. Most importantly, the desires. All kinds of them. What are you and the other person looking for? Will you see each other again? For how long a time? Are both of you tired of being alone, of not knowing the full names first?

And wouldn't it be nice if you could look into other people's minds! It could help you with your living so much! Then you could find out this and that without being embarrassed. But

you can't... it's not living. After all, we must be realistic.

To look into other people's minds; to know what that person who may or may not be looking at you is thinking. Such knowledge would enable one to know what actions he may wish to undertake in regard to the other individual. It is this lack of knowledge which creates the "fear of rejection" which inhibits so many people in their attempis to know others.

But, again, it's not realistic... it's not living. Hence, the mind games and the art of "cruising" have become refined with the main idea of trying to know other people without affording them the opportunity to learn about you first. The whole concept of self-protection is embedded into the cruising ritual. This ritual wouldn't be needed, of

Everyone is special in some way; yet, a few try to act as though they are so important because of social status or physical attributes, that they can afford to be callous in treating the feelings of others. Only a few weeks ago, while at a downtown disco, I was asked by someone i had never met whether I would dance with him. I agreed, and we had a great time dancing together. Afterwards this person told me that he expected I would turn him down, because I was "too goodlooking to be nice."

NO ONE is too good looking to be nice. And the sooner some gay men and women realize this, the more friendly the gay social wwwwwle

A friendly smile from someone else doesn't have to mean that he is only interested in sex and nothing else. Several months ago I wrote about cruising for friends and how this is infinitely more rewarding than a night of mindless sex. If more of us would take this approach in trying to meet other people, much of the stigma attaching to bar-cruising would disappear.

I look forward to the time when people will try to make themselves more accessible to others; when they will relate their full name, age, occupation, and desires rather than engage in anonymous trysts. It would make this part of living so much more pleasant and make truly gay living more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Won't you try?
